BRIC-THSTI celebrates 16th Foundation Day
Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), an institute of Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC), Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India celebrated its 16th Foundation Day on 15th July 2025 in a ceremony marked by distinguished guests and significant milestones.
Hon’ble Minister, Dr. Jitendra Singh ji, Minister of State (IC) Ministry of Science & Technology and Ministry of Earth Sciences; Minister of State for PMO, MoPPP, DAE and DoS, Government of India, was the chief guest. Dr Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Director General, Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC) and Dr Alka Sharma, Senior Adviser, Scientist H, DBT, also attended the celebrations. Directors of various iBRIC+ institutes and leading industrialists were also part of THSTI’s Foundation Day celebrations.
During the event, Prof. Ganesan Karthikeyan, Executive Director, THSTI, presented the notable achievements made by THSTI. He showcased progress in various research areas such as virus research, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, maternal and child health, and more. Prof. Karthikeyan also shared a brief on the upcoming medical research centre and translational research facility at the NCR Biotech Science cluster. Additionally, he highlighted the success of SYNCHN, the second industry-business meet held on July 14th, 2025, which brought together stakeholders from industry, funders, policymakers and researchers for collaborative bio-innovation advancements.
Dr Alka Sharma, Senior Adviser & Scientist H, Department of Biotechnology delivered a presentation on THSTI’s 16-year journey through the lens of DBT. She highlighted the impact and the success that THSTI has achieved during its 16-year journey.
During the celebrations, Dr. Anil Koul, Professor of Translational Discovery at LSHTM, London, delivered the Foundation Day lecture. He unveiled a promising new molecule for treating tuberculosis (TB) and explored the future of TB care, emphasizing the urgent need for innovation, especially with India's high disease burden. Dr Koul highlighted THSTI’s standing as a world-class center for research, equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure and deep expertise.
Hon’ble Minister, Dr. Jitendra Singh ji, in his presidential address, lauded THSTI for landmark achievements in a short span of 16 years. During the event, numerous collaborations with industry partners across various domains were unveiled through signed agreements. Dr. Singh congratulated THSTI for successfully hosting the second industry business meet, SYNCHN2025, and lauded the institute for its many success stories that have brought global recognition to India. He also visited the upcoming Medical Research Centre (MRC) and commended the leadership for establishing such a vital facility.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony, recognizing the outstanding achievements of THSTI's faculty, scientists, PhD scholars, and staff, and a cultural function.
