Currently, my lab is working to understand the genome and genetics of microbial community associated with (a) Gastroenteritis (b) Sepsis (c) Term and preterm birth.
(a) Genomics of bacterial pathogens: We are investigating the (i) genome compositions and functions of bacterial pathogens associated with SEPSIS, DIARRHOEA and GASTRIC CANCER (ii) Emergence of antimicrobial resistant bacterial pathogens. In addition, our lab is actively involved in engineering bacterial genome for developing reporter strains to screen compound library and identify hit molecules that will help to restore the efficacy of existing antibiotics against drug resistant bacterial pathogens, specially Gram-negative ESKAPE pathogens.
Vision: Identify potential target and hit molecules for developing antibiotic potentiators.
(b) Alternative to Antibiotics: Extensive drug-resistant bacterial pathogens drastically reduce the efficacy of most of the routinely used antibiotics in the health sector. Antimicrobial resistant crisis is a urgent situation that needs immediate attention. An alternative to antibiotics to tackle drug-resistant bacterial pathogens is a potential option. We are working on the discovery and development of bacteriophage-based biotherapeutics to treat extensively drug-resistant bacterial pathogens responsible for sepsis, urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and gastro-intestinal tract infections. We have isolated hundreds of bacteriophages that can eliminate Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae from the infection sites. Currently, we are developing effective bacteriophage coktails to use it against blood-stream infections, respiratory tract infections, and gastro-intestinal tract infections.
Vision: Develop an effective phage cocktail to treat extensive drug-resistant bacterial infections.
(c) Reproductive tract microbiome: We are decoding the metagenomics sequences Indian women enrolled in the GARBH-Ini pregnancy cohort. Our major focus is oriented to understand the (i) role of vaginal microbiota in the birth outcomes (ii) specific microbial genomic signatures associated with birth outcomes. We have isolated different Lactobacillus species from the vaginal milieu of Indian women. Currently, decoding their genome sequences and looking for functions associated with inflammation, anti-inflammation, antimicrobial and antimicrobial resistance.
Vision: Understand the biology of preterm birth (PTB) and role of vaginal microbiota in PTB.
