Visit of Prof. Guruprasad Aithal
Eminent hepatologist Prof. Guruprasad Aithal, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, University of Nottingham visited Translational Health Sciences and Technology Institute (THSTI) on 19th May 2022. Prof. Pramod Garg, ED, THSTI welcomed Prof. Aithal to THSTI followed by introduction of the speaker by Dr. Amit Kumar Yadav. Prof. Aithal delivered a keynote lecture on the effects on genomic predisposition (Nature) and diet (Nurture) on Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Addressing the faculty members, scientists and students, he spoke about NAFLD in context of the thrifty gene hypothesis as well as the drifty gene hypothesis. Prof. Aithal stressed on the role of genomic variants, diet and types of food on the development of NAFLD and the intervention studies to understand the disease in a better way. After the talk, the audience had an engaging Question-Answer session with Prof Aithal. This was followed by another talk by Dr. Bhabatosh Das who discussed the role of microbiome in the development of NAFLD.
Post the session, the NCD group had an engaging discussion with Prof Aithal on the NAFLD research area, which was followed by lunch and subsequently his departure to AIIMS, New Delhi.
