15th Foundation Day of BRIC-THSTI
Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) an institute of Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC), Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India celebrated its 15th Foundation Day on 15th July 2024 in a ceremony marked by distinguished guests and significant milestones. The celebrations saw the inauguration of three high-end facilities by the Chief Guest, Dr. Jitendra Singh ji, Hon’ble Minister of State (IC) Ministry of Science & Technology and Ministry of Earth Sciences; Minister of State for PMO, MoPPP, DAE and DoS, Government of India. The facilities were Experimental Animal Facility, CEPI-Centralized Animal Model Network Facility, and the Genetically defined Human Associated Microbial Culture Collection (Ge-HuMiC) Facility.
Prof. Ganesan Karthikeyan, Executive Director, THSTI, delivered an address outlining the institute's impressive achievements over the past year. Additionally, he highlighted the success of SYNCHN, the industry meet held on July 14th, 2024, which brought together stakeholders for collaborative bio-innovation advancements.
Dr. Ramesh Hariharan, CEO of Strand Life Sciences, delivered a captivating motivational address on translational research, emphasizing the translation of science into successful business ventures, specifically from a start-up perspective. Prof. Srinath Reddy, Honorary Distinguished Professor and Ex-President of the Public Health Foundation of India, was the Guest of Honor and delivered the Foundation Day Lecture. His address emphasized the critical need for translational research that has scientific credibility, financial feasibility and equity promotion policies. He commended THSTI's journey towards becoming a translation research hub. Dr. M. Srinivas, Director, AIIMS, New Delhi lauded THSTI's contributions to medical biotechnology and highlighted the fruitful collaborations between AIIMS and THSTI across diverse research domains.
Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Director General, BRIC and Secretary, DBT, congratulated THSTI on its 15th Foundation day. He recognized THSTI's role as a key institute within DBT, focusing on biomanufacturing advancements. He commended the institute's journey and contributions made by both scientific and administrative staff.
Hon’ble minister, Dr. Jitendra Singh ji, in his presidential address, lauded THSTI for landmark achievements in a short span of 15 years. He lauded THSTI's accomplishments in infectious diseases, mother & child health, microbiome research, and vaccine & monoclonal antibody development. Notably, Dr. Singh lauded THSTI in developing Nipah monoclonal antibodies and the newly inaugurated CEPI-network lab for animal models. He also congratulated the institute for its industry partnerships, which will accelerate translational research. Dr. Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting industry collaborations to develop effective treatments for diseases affecting India’s population.
The ceremony witnessed the signing of significant agreements between THSTI and leading industrial partners. These collaborations mark a pivotal step forward in fostering academia-industry synergy, a significant stepping stone in bioinnovation and biomanufacturing. The ceremony concluded with the distribution of awards, acknowledging the outstanding performance of faculty, scientists, PhD scholars, and staff members across their respective fields.
