The future of healthcare is rapidly evolving, driven by the transformative power of artificial intelligence. This was the central theme of a compelling National Science Day lecture delivered by Dr. Krithika Rangarajan, an Oncoradiologist from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, at the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) on 28th February 2025.
Dr. Rangarajan's lecture, titled “Transformation of healthcare with AI, time to fasten your seatbelts,” captivated the audience with its insightful exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in the medical field. She shared her research insights on the use of datasets and AI in radiology, demonstrating how these technologies are driving the development of innovative diagnostic models.
"The potential of AI in healthcare is immense," Dr. Rangarajan explained. "It's enabling us to analyze huge medical data with unprecedented speed and accuracy." However, she also emphasized the critical importance of a balanced approach. "While AI offers incredible tools, we must remember that it is a tool," she cautioned. Dr Rangarajan emphasized that the researchers and clinicians must exercise their own judgment and wisdom, ensuring that AI-driven insights are always validated and interpreted with a human touch.
The event began with a warm welcome address by Prof. G. Karthikeyan, Executive Director, THSTI, who encouraged attendees to embrace the accessibility of modern technologies to address pressing healthcare challenges.
The lecture was highly interactive, with enthusiastic participation from the audience. Numerous questions were raised about the practical relevance and ethical considerations of AI in healthcare, demonstrating the keen interest and engagement of those present.
The event concluded on a positive note, with Dr. Rangarajan's message of responsible innovation resonating deeply.
